Goniostat for the Tormek
This jig is used for accurately sharpening tools at specific angles. This design works with tools which have square, rectangular, or round bars. These jig parts are mostly 3D-printed as this allows me to keep the cost down. The parts are shown in different colors; however all will be the same in the set delivered. Prices shown do not include taxes nor shipping. Instructions (PDF file) for using it. Goniostat BaseThe tools sharpened with this are outlined in the Sharpening Handbook, and includes:
Parts included with the Goniostat Base include:
The Tormek SVD-110 Tool Rest is needed to use this jig, but is not included with this jig. Tool Holder SetParts included in the Tool Holder Set are the tool holders (shown in green) for tools with round rods. The set screws needed for using these are included. These parts are shown separately as they are not needed when sharpening tools with square or rectangular rods. The holders provided are for these rod sizes:
Ordering this set does not include the Goniostat Base, nor the Fixed Base set. Tool Holder for Pen MillsWhen sharpening a pen mill, this part will be useful. There are witness marks in the top part to help with ensuring the pen mill's cutters are aligned correctly. Note: when ordering, you will need to specify the diameter of the tenon needed to hold your mill. Ordering this does not include the Goniostat Base, nor the Fixed Base set. Additionally, no pen milling components are included. Fixed Base for Tool Holders
When sharpening a fly cutter for rose engine work, there are some standard angles which get used often: 30°, 60°, 90°, & 120°. These fixed bases allow for sharpening at one of those angles without having to fiddle around with setting the fence, sharpen one side, and then swap the fence around for sharpening the other side. They are particularly useful if you want to swap grinding wheels and continue to use higher and higher grits. All of the tool holders outlined above can be used with any of these. The instructions for the Rose Engine Fly Cutter, Round Rod outline a setting for both α and β. These bases are set for the α angles.
A setup block used to set the fixed base at a β of 75° is also provided. It is used as shown in the picture to the right, and makes setting this angle easier than using the WM-200. The Tormek SVD-110 Tool Rest is needed to use this jig, but is not included with this jig. The Tool Holder Set is also not included. |
